Birth certificate copies
What we provide
We provide copies of birth certificates where the birth occurred in our district.
This is a full copy of the birth entry and includes particulars of parentage and registration. This type of certificate is required to obtain a passport for people born on or after 1st January 1983.
This shows only the name and surname, sex, date of birth and district of birth.
What we do not provide
We do not provide certificates for births that occurred outside of our district.
Records of adoptions in England and Wales are held by the Registrar General. Applications for adoption certificates should be made in writing to:

How to apply
You can request copies of a birth certificate using our birth certificate copy application form.
Alternatively you can call us with the birth details and a credit or debit card number.

Please note that once the certificate has been posted, it is no longer the responsibility of the council and all claims for missing items should be addressed to Royal Mail directly.
What you will need
The information required to request a copy certificate is the:
- full name at birth
- date of birth
- place of birth
- full name of parents
