The council’s spending plans for 2016/17 were approved at the council meeting on 24 February 2016.
The 2016/17 budget represented the most difficult financial challenge the council has ever faced. As a consequence of the Government’s financial settlement the council was required to set a legal and balance budget within a very short timescale.
Due to the short time available there were very few options available to the council and in practice over £5m of reserves were needed to set the budget. In making this decision the council recognised that using such an amount was not sustainable over the medium term and a range of further savings proposals were therefore agreed for consultation.
In July 2016 the Council agreed a set of in year savings proposals totalling over £3m for immediate implementation.
Looking to the future the council has agreed to accept the Government’s offer of a four year financial settlement. In September 2016 an Efficiency Plan was agreed setting out how the council expects to achieve balanced budgets from 2016 to 2020.
