Citizenship ceremonies

Citizenship ceremonies are an occasion for applicants to formally attain British citizenship attended by family and close friends.

Citizenship services we provide

The process starts when you apply to UK Visas and Immigration for British Citizenship.

When your application is complete, UK Visas and Immigration will contact you inviting you to contact your Register Office to book into a ceremony. At the same time, UK Visas and Immigration contact us with your Citizenship Certificate.

On receipt of your certificate, we will write to you, giving details of our next ceremony and alternative arrangements should you require them. We will also send a questionnaire and all the details you require about the ceremony.

What is a citizenship ceremony?

Our ceremonies are held in groups, usually of between 10 and 20 people, but numbers are dictated by demand. You are very welcome to bring a couple of guests with you to the ceremony.

On arrival at the ceremony, please show your invitation and any other documents requested prior to the ceremony. Refreshments will be served prior to the ceremony.

A pledge card will be handed to you, with the words to the oath or affirmation and pledge that you have to say during the ceremony on it.

The Superintendent Registrar (or deputy) will host the ceremony, and a local dignitary will be in attendance to welcome you to the Borough.

After speeches of welcome, the Superintendent Registrar will invite you to swear the Oath of allegiance or, if you prefer, to speak the affirmation of allegiance (as chosen on your questionnaire). If you are going to swear the Oath before Almighty God, you may bring a holy book with you.

The Dignitary will then present your citizenship certificate; you will also be presented with a welcome pack and gift from Bracknell Forest Council.

The ceremony is closed with the playing of the National Anthem. The ceremony lasts approximately 40 minutes.

If you would prefer to arrange an individual ceremony, this is possible at the register office.

You will already have paid for the ceremony as part of the British Citizenship application.

If you would prefer to arrange an individual ceremony, this is possible for a fee of £135. This fee applies to each person taking ceremony, not the guests.

The room holds up to 4 people plus the registrar. This means that if there is one person taking the ceremony, you can invite up to 3 guests. If there are 2 people taking the ceremony you can invite up to 2 guests.

Individual ceremonies take place Monday to Friday, subject to availability.
