School Admission and School Exclusion Appeal Panels

What are the School Admission Appeal Panels?
School Admission Appeal Panels determine appeals lodged by parents where their child is not offered a place at their preferred school.

What are the School Exclusion Appeal Panels?
School Exclusion Appeal Panels determine appeals lodged by parents against the permanent exclusion of their child from school.

Who is on the panel?
Each appeal panel is made up of two categories of people:

  • people who have not worked in a school except as a governor or volunteer and
  • people who are experienced in education, such as teachers, teaching assistants or parents of registered pupils.

What kind of skills and experience do panel members need?
There are no specific qualifications or experience that you need to become a panel member and almost anyone can take on the role.  We welcome people with all types of knowledge, background and experience, as groups made up of diverse individuals tend to make better informed decisions.

Most people will already have a range of skills to help them become a panel member and we offer good quality training and support, so don’t worry if you think you don’t yet have some of the skills or confidence to take on the role.

Panel members find the work interesting and rewarding.  Take a look at the comments of Bob Hook, one of our panel members.

Are you interested in volunteering?
We are currently looking to recruit people to serve on panels in each of the two categories. Service on such panels is voluntary, with training being provided and the payment of any travel expenses incurred. Appeals are scheduled throughout the year and are held during office hours.

If you would like to become involved in this interesting and rewarding work please look at our information for applicants booklet and complete an application form and send it to the Clerk to the Appeal Panel, Corporate Services, Easthampstead House, Town Square, Bracknell, RG12 1AQ.

Bracknell Forest Borough Council makes arrangements for the recruitment of people to serve on school admission and school exclusion appeal panels under schedules 18, 24 and 25 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
