Your Development

Your development is key to you, your family, your happiness and your lifestyle. It’s also important to us that you feel confident to do the best in your job and move forward, developing and up-dating your skills. That’s why at Bracknell Forest we take learning and development so seriously.

* Forest Fact - Much of our training takes place in our very own Easthampstead Park Conference Centre, a Victorian country mansion set in 60 acres of private grounds.

Induction: the key to getting to know us

We see induction as key to getting you on the road to a rewarding and stimulating time with us. During your first few months in post all new employees engage on an induction programme that includes an introduction to the Council by the Chief Executive.

* Forest Fact - We run an interactive session where new staff are invited to give us frank feedback on their first impressions - it's important!

All new staff have the opportunity to ask any questions which they have regarding the Council and any other employment related issues at these sessions.

Management Development

As part of our learning and development strategy, we’ve established partnerships with Bracknell and Wokingham College and other external bodies to develop nationally recognised courses for managers and supervisors. We also run a series of short management workshops delivered either by Bracknell Forest training staff or external providers, covering different aspects of managing ranging from chairing meetings to managing projects.

* Forest Fact - If you are new to management in Bracknell Forest, an additional module introduces some of our key policies and procedures relating to managing your teams effectively.

And there’s more…

A wide selection of opportunities are available to all employees, including those with special responsibilities such as recognised first-aiders, fire wardens, manual handling and VDU risk assessors. We continue to develop an even wider range of workshops to help people gain new skills or knowledge, where this is the most sensible approach. In addition, our team of learning and development advisors are on hand to provide advice, guidance and assistance.

We are an accredited centre for the provision of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in Management, Customer Services, Business Administration, ITQ, Youth Work and Basic Skills for Working Life. These can be provided for any employee regardless of their age. Finally, we’re also a registered centre for both the basic and advanced European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).

As each person has a preferred style in which they learn best, we have developed a range of learning opportunities including coaching, secondments, project working, visits to other organisations, directed reading and mentoring.

“No experience required”

Many of our jobs require previous experience and you’ll need to look carefully at the Person Specification contained within the Application Pack for further details.

However, from time-to-time we have opportunities where no experience is required. Keep looking at vacancies on our jobs pages for opportunities.

Apprentice Training Schemes

Apprenticeships provide people up to the age of 25 of all ability levels with the skills and qualifications to meet the future needs of the Council. The programme offers a choice from a wide range of occupational training. Find out more about apprenticeships.
