Sandbags

The Council has a supply of sandbags in stock that will be used for priorities such as keeping transport routes open, helping the emergency services and protecting Council buildings such as schools and leisure centres which may be needed as temporary accommodation if residents are made homeless in the event of flooding.

We will also try to supply sandbags to vulnerable residents living in private accommodation if they are unable to leave their homes.

We would strongly advise private homeowners and landlords to be prepared to protect their property against flooding as the Council will not be able to supply sandbags to private households when there is the threat of flooding. Sandbags can be bought through building suppliers or merchants – check the listings in the telephone directory for details. Sandbags are often regarded by building suppliers as a seasonal item so they may not be easily available throughout the year.

The Environment Agency has produced guidance on damage limitation, which includes information about how to use sandbags. A copy of this can be downloaded from the right-hand side of this page.
