What is Emergency Planning?
Most of us plan for emergencies whether by installing a fire extinguisher, carrying a basic first-aid kit or by keeping some warm clothing and blankets stowed in the car during periods of extremely cold weather. On a larger scale, Local Authorities and Government, businesses and other large organisations also plan for unexpected incidents.
The objectives of Emergency Planning as defined by the Bracknell Forest Borough Council Emergency Plan are:
- To save life.
- To prevent escalation of an emergency.
- To relieve suffering.
- To safeguard the environment.
- To protect property.
- To continue to maintain services at an appropriate level.
- To inform the public.
- To promote self help and recovery.
- To restore normality as soon as possible.
- To evaluate the response and identify lessons to be learned.
- To facilitate criminal investigations or other inquiries.
Usually, the Emergency Services deal with any incident quickly and effectively. However, some incidents are beyond the normal capacity of the Emergency Services so the Bracknell Forest Emergency Plan would be put into action in order to appropriately assist the Emergency Services during a major incident. Perhaps even more significant is the continued support and maintenance of an effective and useful service during the post-disaster recovery process which the Emergency Plan considers.
