Food Alerts
Food Alerts (or Food Hazard Warnings) are issued by the Food Standards Agency. They are a way of letting local authorities know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, provide details of specific action to be taken.
The aim of a Food Alert is to ensure that appropriate action is taken by the FSA, local authorities and the food industry, and, when necessary, to remove hazardous or unsatisfactory food from the food chain.
Who receives the Food Alerts?
Food Alerts are sent to consultants in Communicable Disease Control, Trading Standards officers and food trade organisations in order to alert them to current food issues. Food Alerts are often released in conjunction with a product withdrawal or recall by a manufacturer, retailer or distributor and are issued under two categories:
- For Action
- For Information
