Who Investigates Incidents?

Enforcement responsibility is split between us as the Local Authority and the Health and Safety Executive. We are the enforcing Authority for the following types of premises in the borough:

  • Shops and retailing. Includes market stalls, coin operated launderettes and mobile vendors
  • Most offices
  • Wholesale and retail warehouses
  • Hotels and other residential catering accommodation. Includes guest houses, residential care homes and hostels
  • Catering. Includes restaurants, pubs, cafes and wine bars
  • Leisure and entertainment. Includes night clubs, social clubs, sports facilities and health clubs
  • Places of worship and undertakers
  • Beauty and non-medical therapeutic services. Includes massage, saunas, solariums, tattooing, skin and body piercing and hairdressing
  • Playgroups and nurseries

The Health and Safety Executive investigate incidents occurring at:

  • Specialist work places such as motor vehicle garages that carry out re-spraying and manufacturing
  • Premises owned by the Local Authority
