Cooling Towers
If you control non-domestic premises you must ensure that you notify the local authority of any cooling tower or evaporative condenser (notifiable devices) on the premises.
We need to know about cooling towers because of the potential for Legionella Pneumophia bacterium (Legionellosis) to be found in many recirculators and water supply systems. Notification assists inspectors in investigating Legionella outbreaks thought likely to have arisen from wet cooling towers or evaporative condensers.
Notification must be in writing (including by electronic means) on a form approved by the Health & Safety Executive. You can use the link below to notify us.
You must also tell us about any changes to the notification information within one month of the change, in writing.
If the device ceases to be a notifiable device you must let us know in writing as soon as possible.

What the law says
The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condenser Regulations 1992 require the notification of wet cooling towers and evaporative condensers to local authorities in whose area the equipment is situated, regardless of whether the local authority or Health and Safety (Executive) is the enforcing authority. The Regulations also require notification to the local authority of the closure of the device.
How long will my notification take to process?
We aim to process your notification as soon as possible. We will confirm that we have received your notification. Please contact us if you have any queries. You can do this online if you notified us through the UK Welcomes service or use the contact details on this page.
- Notify us of any cooling towers or evaporative condensers on your premises
- Tell us about a change to any existing cooling towers or evaporative condensers on your premises
There is no charge for notification.
Complaints about cooling towers
Initially, please try contacting the owner of the cooling tower - preferably in the form of a letter (with proof of delivery). If that doesn't work and you are in the UK, you can also contact Consumer Direct who will give you advice. From outside the UK please contact the UK European Consumer Centre.
