Listed Buildings Planning Information and Consent

Listed Building Consent is needed for any works to a Listed Building, however minor or insignificant, which affects the character of the building as one of special architectural or historic interest. In effect this means that almost all work to a Listed Building requires such consent.

The listing of a building always includes the interior as well as the exterior, so any internal alterations may also require Listed Building Consent.

Any building which is attached to a Listed Building is also deemed to be listed and buildings within the curtilage of a Listed Building would also require Listed Building Consent in the event of any works being undertaken to them. Consent is also required for the demolition of a Listed Building or any part of it.

The listing of a building is not intended to prevent any alterations or changes but rather to ensure that if alterations are carried out, they are in keeping with the character of the building.

It is an offence to carry out any work to a Listed Building without first obtaining Listed Building Consent.
