Young Pedestrians

The risk of a child pedestrian being involved in a road accident rises significantly at the age when they start school and, up until the age of nine, most children cannot judge how fast vehicles are going or how far away they are. They depend on parents' help to teach them road safety skills. An older child should never be put in charge of a younger sibling as it is too much responsibility for them.

The Road Safety Team has a “road safety box” designed for nursery/reception-aged children containing a selection of resources including dressing up clothes, books, activity sheets, games, videos and much more. A mini pedestrian crossing set includes a zebra crossing mat and two beacons with bases. Please contact the Road Safety Team to discuss road safety resources we have available for you to order, borrow or request.

Further advice on teaching your child road safety is available at the Think! Road safety website. The hedgehogs website is a fun and educational resource aimed at young children reinforcing the 'stop, look, listen, live' message.
