Annual Car Free Challenge

The Council’s annual challenge to local businesses to encourage staff to travel to work without using the car took place on 19 September in 2008.

The challenge is designed to raise awareness of alternative travel modes and encourage businesses to develop travel plans aimed at staff using greener, cleaner travel choices, and reducing reliance on the car. The Council can work with businesses across the borough to develop travel plans.

If you would like to discuss the wider implications of travel to, from and for work, and would welcome help to identify potential cost savings and employee benefits associated with travel, please contact Phil Burke, Travel Plan Co-ordinator at Bracknell Forest Borough Council, on 01344 351266.

Avis retain the car free challenge trophy

Avis won the Annual Car Free Challenge in 2007Car hire company Avis Europe narrowly won this year’s Bracknell Forest car free challenge, to retain the coveted trophy for a second year.

A total of 39 per cent of its 328 staff, who are based in Park Road, Bracknell, were encouraged to share lifts or leave their cars at home on Friday, 19 September.

Runners up were 3M with 32 per cent, while previous winners Sharp Telecommunications and Bracknell Forest Council, together with Syngenta, were further back.

The Council lays down the challenge each year to see who can get the most members of staff to consider travelling to work using more sustainable modes of transport. The challenge is held on the nearest Friday to European Car Free Day which is on 22 September and forms part of European Mobility Week. Its aim is to encourage more people to try the alternatives to just jumping in the car.

Hilary White from Avis, said: "We are really pleased to have won the Bracknell Forest car free challenge for a second year.

"I would like to thank all the staff members who took part, and I hope we'll be back to challenge for the title again next year."

Cllr Mrs Mary Ballin, Executive Member for Planning and Transportation, said: “I would like to congratulate Avis for retaining the trophy in this year’s car free challenge.

“We hope the challenge will encourage more people to think about regularly leaving the car at home. In the current economic climate it is not just the health and environmental benefits, it makes financial sense too.”
