School travel - help for schools
The council has a legal duty to promote sustainable travel to and from school. Active forms of travel such as walking and cycling are a great way to build physical exercise into daily routines. They also help reduce congestion, especially in the morning peak, which benefits us all.
The council fulfills its obligation to promote sustainable travel in a number of ways. It encourages schools to implement measures that promote sustainable travel. These measures are often formalized in a school travel plan. The council supports schools by providing information and resources, running campaigns and incentive schemes. The council also undertakes highway improvements which encourage sustainable travel modes.
The council offers the following guides and leaflets which are available to download from the right of this page;
- Ideas to promote walking and cycling
- Walking buses
- Considerate car use
- The Journey newsletter
- Setting up a walking zone
The council offers the following resources for temporary loan;
- ‘Walk to School’ banner for use on the school site
- ‘Keep the zig-zags clear’ banner for use on the school site
- Pedometer packs with accompanying lesson plans
Using data collected from the annual school census, the council also provides each school with a map showing where pupils live and how they travel to school, and a school travel ‘health check’ report.
There are also a number of independent websites which provide ideas, help and resources for schools. Links to these web sites can be found to the right of this page.
The council promotes a number of events throughout the school year which encourage, promote and incentivise walking and cycling to school.
A diary of the events can be downloaded from the right of this page.
The council also promotes a term-long walking incentive scheme aimed at primary school children called Wow – Walk once a Week – through which children can earn a free session at Coral Reef Waterworld at the end of term. See the WoW download at the right of this page for more information.
Virtually all local authority schools in the borough have implemented a school travel plan (STP). We believe STPs to be the best way to monitor and review the work schools are doing to promote sustainable travel initiatives. We encourage all schools to review their plans on an annual basis. To help schools with this task we provide schools with a simple review template, available to download from the right of this page.
To encourage schools to continually monitor and develop their STPs, Bracknell schools can enter the Berkshire STEP awards which recognises and rewards schools who demonstrate commitment to their STP. For more details download the Berkshire STEP pack from the right of this page.
