Berkshire STEP

In recent years many schools within Berkshire have developed school travel plans in order to address health, safety and environmental problems associated with high car use for school travel. Other schools are in the process of developing their travel plans or have yet to start. As a way of encouraging and rewarding schools further, the local authorities of Berkshire have developed the School Travel Excellence Programme.
Using a system of self-assessment, schools can gauge the success of their travel plan against identified criteria such as consultation, curriculum activities, measures implemented, promotion and publicity, and progress towards targets.
Bronze, silver and gold standards have been developed and certificates are awarded to schools, based on their assessments. Receiving a bronze, silver or gold STEP certificate is an opportunity for schools to demonstrate to pupils, parents, governors and everyone in the school community, that they are promoting safe and sustainable travel to their school.
Schools in Bracknell Forest that have received awards under this system are:
- Sandy Lane Primary (Silver)
- Harmans Water Primary (Bronze)
- St Michael’s Easthampstead CE Primary (Bronze)
- Wildridings Primary (Bronze)
If you would like your school to be considered for an award, please download the guidelines and self assessment form from this page. The next deadline for submissions is at the end of June 2009.
