Reference and Information Services

Enquiry Service

Librarians are Available for helpWhatever you need to know, whether it is a telephone number, information on an artist, or your employment rights, we can help you with your enquiry. Based at Bracknell Library our enquiry service will take enquiries from any member of the public, either by telephone, e-mail or in person. We will usually answer your enquiry within five days but, even if we are unable to find the answer, we will normally be able to refer you to someone who can.

Reference and Information Resources

Most libraries in the borough hold a basic reference and information collection that can be consulted both by library members and by non-members. These include:

Internet Access

  • All libraries provide free access to the Internet. Library members are currently entitled to one hour's access each day.
  • Use is subject to agreement of the Internet Acceptable Use Police.

Local and Community Information

  • Information on schools including Ofsted Reports, Performance League tables and Catchment Area Maps
  • Details of Council services such as minutes and agendas of council committee meetings, statistics, Local qand Structure Plans.

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

  • English dictionaries, foreign language dictionaries and general encyclopedias

Newspapers, Magazines and Periodicals

Study Facilities

  • Most libraries provide quiet reading and study facilities
  • Internet PCs, Scanners and Photocopiers

Specialist Resources at Bracknell Library

  • The major Reference and Information collection is based at the central library at Bracknell. This includes:

Directories

  • UK business directories
  • Statistics
  • Other specialist directories, yearbooks and almanacs
  • Full set of UK Yellow Pages and telephone directories

Maps and Atlases

  • Road maps for the UK and abroad
  • Street atlases for the UK and abroad
  • World maps and atlases
  • Full set of Ordnance Survey Landranger maps
  • Specialist mapping such as postcode and historical atlases, and historical maps for the local area

Statistics

  • Local, National, European and some World statistics
  • Census tables for Bracknell Forest

Careers Information

  • Guides to Further and Higher Education courses in the UK
  • Guides to careers and working abroad

Other Specialist Collections

  • Legal information including Acts of Parliament, general guides to the law and laymen's guides to particular aspects of the law
  • European information, including statistics and general information on the European Union
  • Tourist information, including Camping, Bed and Breakfast, Hostel and Hotel accommodation guides
  • Local history; including books, pamphlets, trade directories, maps and photographs. There are also archives of local newspapers on microfilm, census returns and the IGI
