Information and Support for Schools and Providers

  • Support and expectations for schools are detailed in the Information File
  • Study Support covers all learning activities outside of the normal school day..

The Borough Council is supporting the work of schools, in children’s centres and with a variety of partners.  This page contains links to guidance and other documents.

In schools, extended services are not separate from the Standards agenda but go to the heart of the well-being issues which allow or prevent children from achieving.  Extended services can play a central role in supporting personalised learning and teaching.  By tailoring education to meet each child’s learning needs, abilities and aspirations, personalised learning ensures that children enjoy their time at school and that they are equipped with the skills and attitudes to do well.

What are the benefits for schools?

Providing extended services puts schools in a position to shape the range and delivery of the services that they offer, but the first question they will want to answer is, “Why become an extended school?”  Extended schools:

  • help to motivate and enthuse pupils
  • promote equality of opportunity for pupils to participate in a wide range of activities
  • can help to close the achievement gap
  • build on the best existing practice in schools
  • place children at the centre of a network of services which support their learning and general wellbeing
  • help to ensure that children arrive in school ready to learn
  • promote greater parental involvement in their children’s learning
  • help to forge stronger links with the community
  • contribute to meeting the five Every Child Matters outcomes
  • can help to reinvigorate local communities.
