Bookstart, an initiative to help your readers start early

Bookstart is the national programme that encourages a lifelong love of stories, songs and rhymes by providing free packs of books for babies and preschoolers.

Sharing books with your child from an early age is a wonderful way to build a loving relationship, increase their language skills and help children to understand their world.

What’s in a Bookstart pack?

  • Two books
  • Colouring materials (except the baby pack)
  • Information on sharing books

  • Age 0–12 months
  • Gifted by your health visitor

Bookstart Treasure ChestBookstart Treasure Chest

  • Age 3–4 years old
  • Available from libraries, children's centres and early years settings

Booktouch packs

  • Age 0-4 years old  
  • For blind and partially-sighted children

Bookshine packs

  • Age 0–4 years old
  • For deaf children

Bookstart BearBookstart Bear Club

The Bookstart bear Club is a fun and engaging, free membership club for all babies, toddlers and preschoolers. It will open up an exciting world as you and your child explore stories, books and rhymes together. Call into your local library to register and collect your child's free membership pack.
