English as an Additional Language
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Support Team is part of the Social Care and Learning department. It works in partnership with schools to raise the attainment of pupils with English as an additional language. and carries out the following wide range of functions:
- Liaison with families and encouragement of parental involvement
- Language assessment and provision of reports
- Support for pupils in the early stages of learning English
- Advice regarding linguistic and cultural matters
- Liaison with class teachers in developing language programmes within the curriculum
- Advice on appropriate teaching and learning materials
- Providing INSET to teachers and support staff to meet the language needs of bilingual pupils
- Providing advice and support to teaching assistants
- Liaison with other professionals as appropriate, for instance educational psychologists, health and social workers
