Qualifying to Teach

If you are thinking of a career in teaching there are many different routes available to enable you to obtain qualified teacher status. The information contained on this site will hopefully guide you to the correct route.

Teaching is a highly valued and rewarding profession. As a teacher you will be educating the next generation and few jobs are as varied and challenging.

If you want to study part or full time, follow a flexible route or earn as you train, there is a course for you.

Is Teaching For Me?

You may already have an idea of whether you would like to teach at primary or secondary level and which specialist subject you would like to study. But, before you even apply for your University place we would recommend you consider a day or more observing current practice.

The role of a primary teacher is very different from that of a secondary teacher - it is important you ensure you are on the correct course. The curriculum, teaching methods and life of a school is constantly evolving, and although for some of you your school days may not be too far in the distant past, we are sure you will see some changes.

One of the best ways to find out whether a career in teaching is right for you is to spend some time in a classroom and speak to experienced teachers and school staff.

The Teaching Advocate Programme gives people considering a career in teaching the opportunity to get an insight into teachers' motivations, career choices, challenges and rewards of day-to-day life in a classroom. It is for anyone interested in teaching who wants to hear first-hand what it's like to be a teacher in today's schools.  Call the Teaching Information Line on 0800 085 0962 for further information.

The School Experience Programme (SEP) has been developed to allow you to gain classroom experience in secondary schools.  You will be able to apply for the SEP if you are considering teaching maths, physics, chemistry, design and technology (D&T), information and communication technology (ICT) or a modern foreign language (MFL) at secondary level and hold a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 degree in a related subject.  The duration is flexible (1 to 10 days); this will be agreed between you and your host school.  You will need to register with the TDA if you have not already done so, before you can apply for the SEP.
