Heritage Open Days
Nationally orchestrated by the Civic Trust, Heritage Open Days take place over four days in September. In 2007 seven sites of historic interest across the Borough opened their doors to the public for free. Many people took advantage of the chance to learn about Popes Manor, a private estate once lived in by Alexander Pope in Binfield, join tours of Bracknell’s thriving Arts Centre at South Hill Park and enjoy some of the wonderful features of Warfield’s 1000 year old church. The information trailer in Charles Square proved popular with passing shoppers, many of whom were taken down memory lane with an exhibition of old Bracknell photographs. A well-attended evening service at Easthampstead Church ended the four-day event, which saw much improved visitor numbers from the previous year.
In 2008 Heritage Open Days take place from Thursday 11 September until Sunday 14 September, so note the dates in your diary and watch this space for more details to come.
Reminiscence Groups
Many inhabitants of Bracknell and the surrounding area have interesting memories of their lives here, and reminiscence groups are an ideal way to recall and share these memories. Working with the Community Development Officer, the Heritage Officer has helped to establish a reminiscence group in Priestwood. The group meets every other Tuesday at the Priestwood Community Centre and not only offers a chance to stroll down memory lane but is also a chance to socialise over a cup of tea.
