Within the sport of cycling there are many disciplines including:

Track Cycling: Track racing takes place on short specially built tracks consisting of two tight, banked corners joined by two short straights. The closest outdoor track is Palmer Park in Reading.

Road Racing:  The classic Road Race is a test of stamina, fitness and tactical acumen. You will need a racing licence from British Cycling to compete. If you don't want to go on the road, there are many events at the Hillingdon circuit (who also include events for disabled riders and hand-cycles).

Time Trials: Each rider starts at a known time and tries to complete a predetermined course as fast as possible against the clock. Distances range from 10 miles to 24 hours.

Mountain Biking: Offroad riding - a tough discipline requiring upper body strength, excellent riding skills and balance. There are several sub-categories including endurance, cross-country and downhill.

Cyclo-Cross:  races are usually multi-lap events, held on short grassy courses, generally in public parks or on school playing fields. Less technically demanding than Mountain Biking, Cyclo-Cross often requires riders to dismount to clear artificial obstacles – often wooden boards. Generally an autumn and winter sport.
