Open Access Land

Open access at Wildmoor HeathThe Countryside and Rights of Way (CROW) Act 2000 has created new rights for people to walk on areas of open country and registered common land in England.

These new rights are now in force in Bracknell Forest and three areas of land are now dedicated as Open Access, as shown on this map of PDF Bracknell Forest Open Access Land (1084kb)

  • Wildmoor Heath
Part of this local heathland nature reserve and SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) between Crowthorne and Sandhurst. The site is jointly managed by the Borough Council and the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT).
  • Broadmoor Bottom
A local heathland nature reserve managed by BBOWT.
  • Crowthorne Woods
An area of conifer plantation which has been voluntarily dedicated for Open Access by the Forestry Commission.

Open Access Land in Bracknell Forest is also now shown on new Explorer maps published by the Ordnance Survey.

Open Access SymbolWhere new Open Access rights are in force, this symbol may be seen to show land that is open for public access on foot. Please note that Open Access (also known as ‘Right to Roam’) only applies in these areas.

Rules and Regulations

The new right of open access does not include:

  • Cycling
  • Horse-riding
  • Driving a vehicle
  • Camping

However, where any of these activities already take place, for example horse-riding or cycling on an existing bridleway, the activity is unaffected by the new regulations.

Dog owners should also note that the new access rights require you to keep your dog on a lead of no more than 2m long between 1st March and 31st July (the main breeding period for ground-nesting birds) or at any time of year when you are near livestock.
