Parks and Countryside Sites
The Parks and Countryside section manages more than 80 sites across the borough. Around fifty of these are classed as parks, whilst the other thirty are countryside sites.
These sites are generally located in the urban areas and tend to be heavily used for recreation or for short cuts to and from shops and schools. Many of these sites contain facilities such as sports pitches and childrens play areas. They range in size from less than an acre to the 48 acre site at Lily Hill Park in Bracknell.
The Countryside Sites tend to have a more naturalistic feel to them. Many sites are woodlands, while others include river meadows and heathland. The sites are managed to maintain their high nature conservation and landscape value, often using traditional techniques such as grazing, coppicing, and hedge laying and are very popular with people wanting to get-away-from-it-all. Walkers, horse riders, dog walkers and cyclists use them throughout the year. These sites cover approximately 500 acres and range in size from less than an acre to the 84 acre site at Shepherd Meadows, Sandhurst.
Several sites have accessible paths and details of these are given below. You can find out more information about these and other sites by using the links on the right-hand side of this page. We also have leaflets about accessible routes available on our Parks and Countryside Leaflets page.
- Ambarrow Court
A disabled access path runs through Ambarrow Court, including handrails and passing places to allow wheelchair users and mobility-impaired people to access the range of habitats found throughout the site. - Lily Hill Park
Accessible paths (suitable for mobility scooters) have been created as part of restoration works at the site. - Clinton's Hill
Surface paths give access to the picnic area at this site. This is adjacent to the play area. - Longhill Park
The main car park for the site is reached from Long Hill Road. There are four pedestrian access paths to Long Hill Park, as follows: at the junction of Long Hill Road / Harvest Ride; the northern point of Harvest Ride; to the rear of Timline Green; and to the rear of Milman Close. The site is generally flat and reasonably accessible for mobility-impaired people. - Larks Hill
Six pedestrian access points lead onto Larks Hill's hoggin paths which are predominantly suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs (although some may become soft in wet weather). This site is also one of a series of three accessible rural routes around Bracknell and begins in the Larks Hill car park. - Westmorland Park
This is an eight-hectare parkland Green Flag Award Winning site with sports facilities but it also includes grassy areas, a hay meadow, shrub beds, mature parkland trees with a surfaced path running parallel to the west boundary.
Five sites contain balancing ponds, specially engineered ponds that are designed to hold and store excess water in times of flood. Their maintenance is the responsibility of Thames Water.
Further information on some of these sites is available from the links on the right or via the leaflets produced by the department. If you do not find the information you need, please contact us using the details on the right-hand side of this page.
