History

A small ancient woodland copse off Jock's Lane used to be set in an open rural farmland landscape. An old air strip prior to 1930s ran between this copse and Tinkers Copse. The name 'Jock' refers to a Scottish vagrant who frequented the copse in the early 1800s (per R. Mosses). House building in the 1990s enclosed the copses, which had been derelict and unmanaged for quite some time prior to this.

Jock's Copse is one of the sites that took part in the Woodland Project (2001-2004).

Wildlife

  • A superb spread of bluebells carpet the woods during April and May
  • All three species of woodpeckers and tits nesting in tree holes
  • Golden boughs of hazel coppice - a traditional way of growing and harvesting woodland products in a sustainable way.
  • Secretive woodmice busy on the woodland floor
