History
The first documented reference to Snaprails was as “Shape Rayles” in 1613. It has been suggested that the ornamental pond at this site may be the mutilated remains of a medieval moat. The current site reflects the grounds of the 19th century house that was situated here and the park lodge still stands at the end of the main drive. The original resident of Snaprails House was a keen plant collector and landscaper and today the park benefits from a range of mature trees and ornamental shrubs such as giant redwood, swamp cypress and tulip tree.
The house and grounds fell into disrepair after the Second World War and the site was sold for development in the 1970’s, with Snaprails Park and the bulk of the surrounding estates created in the 1980’s. The park was transferred into the ownership of Bracknell Forest Borough Council and opened to the public in 1985. Much has been done since then to make this site an attractive place for local residents, with a National Lottery grant helping to re-establish the wildlife area to the south of the pond and to open up views of some of the mature specimen trees.
