Fostering - Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have any children, can I still be a carer?

Yes. Whether you have experience of bringing up children or not, you may have other experiences that will make you a good carer. For example you may have:

  • Cared for the children of family or friends
  • Experienced separation from people important to you, or even bereavement. This could help you understand how a child coming into the care system feels
  • Responsibility for health and safety at work
  • Been bullied at school or work and so be able to 'stand up' for a child in a similar situation.

How should I prepare for assessment?

We will help you discover your strengths. You will find it helpful to think about your life experiences and knowledge you have gained in the workplace, or as a member of an organisation or club.

Other useful experiences include hobbies and interests, your own memories of being parented and your relationships with siblings, and other family members.

How will I be matched to a child or family?

When a request for foster care is received, we consider the support needs of the child and the abilities of any carers so that a tentative match can be made.  If the child, the family and carers and you agree, an initial introduction is then be made.

Can fostered children see their family?

Yes.  Although not living together and regardless of the circumstances, parents are still very important to children who are fostered.

They will want to see each other and foster carers, social workers and parents will work closely together to do what’s best for the children and arrange suitable contact plans.

What will I know about a child before they arrive?

Our social workers will talk to you and your family about the child, their family and their needs.

What will the child know about me before they arrive?

We will show the child a pictorial profile of you and your home to help them prepare to meet you and your family.

What happens with schooling?

To avoid unnecessary change and anxiety, we try to ensure that foster children can go to the same school they have been used to. It is possible that you may need to make changes to your school travel arrangements.

If a child is staying with you for a long time, then it may be best for the child to change to a school close to where you are living. We can help you to plan for this change.

Where will children sleep?

During Home Study, your accommodation is assessed to make sure that it is safe for a child. Other than that, what you have to offer will be matched to the needs of the children placed with you.

Do I need to buy specialist equipment?

No. Generally we will be able to provide you with any necessary equipment such as stair gates, buggies, cots, hoists, etc.

Can we stay in touch with the children when they no longer need our support?

It is possible, but only if it is seen to be in the best interests of the child.

Do I have to go to training?

Being a carer means more than just being a caring person and we will require you to undertake regular training sessions, mainly to ensure you are up to speed with the law, regulations and policies.

Many carers also attend training events on lifestyle issues to help them become better carers.

How much support can I expect from the Family Placement Team?

Your supervising social worker will visit you once a month for formal visits to see how you are doing, if your circumstances have changed or what training or other support needs you might have although you can contact your social worker at any time.
