Before You Start
Adoption is first and foremost about what is best for the child/children involved.
Step parent adoption is not the only way to provide a stable and secure family environment or to recognise the rights, roles and responsibilities of family members.
You should therefore consider all alternatives before going ahead with step parent adoption as the Courts will not automatically grant an adoption order and will expect other alternatives to have been explored and assessed.
You can contact us for information and advice before contacting your local county or magistrates court to apply for adoption.
You should also contact a solicitor who specialises in children and family law. You will find details in the local telephone directory or the Yellow Pages.
The nearest magistrates court is:
Reading Magistrates Court
Castle Street
Reading, Berkshire
RG1 7TQ
Tel.: Reading (0118) 980 1800
The court manager will decide which is the appropriate court to hear your application.
