Supported Lodgings

‘I would recommend the role of a supported lodgings carer to anyone who wants to make a difference to young people…it has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience… we have both gained from watching the young adult in our care grow in confidence and skills over the last year’
Peter and Margaret Smith, Supported Lodgings Carers, Bracknell Forest Council

The Smiths have been Supported Lodgings carers for about two years. They came in to it as they both had experience of working with young people in their jobs and personal lives and wanted to put this to good use. They say they have still learnt a huge amount about young people in their time as Carers, and the learning curve has been steep!

Anyone can apply to be a Supported Lodgings carer, providing they have a spare bedroom in their home, and some interest in and /or experience of working with or looking after young people. The kinds of teenagers that need Supported Lodgings accommodation are often care leavers who have been in foster care for a number of years; they might simply not be able to stay within the family home due to a number of experiences such as bereavement, family breakdown or they may be at risk of harm. Some may currently be living in temporary accommodation or have nowhere to live at all. All of them need a secure, supportive and safe environment to guide them in to adulthood, to build their futures and to give them a better quality of life. They need support, guidance and ‘sign-posting’ with things such as career choice, as well as advice to move on to independent living at 19.

As The Smiths say: ‘It is an advantage to have had life or work experiences of dealing with young adults but not essential, just a willingness to work, learn and support people in your care and an acceptance that you will continually need to learn and develop your own skills and of course that at times it will be difficult and frustrating for all concerned. Of course those people who have had a teenager in their house will probably be better placed to understand what they may encounter.’

The Smiths say they have received excellent support and guidance from Bracknell Council and have never felt left out on their own. In return for what they offer, Supported Lodgings Carers in Bracknell receive an allowance, 24-hour support at the end of the phone if needed, numerous training and development opportunities and a dedicated Social Worker who will offer ongoing support.

People wishing to become carers with us should first get in touch via our online Expression of Interest form, or via email or telephone on 01344 351582. The next step is to attend one of our information evenings; and then to receive an initial visit from one of our social workers if you wish to pursue your interest. If both sides agree to move forward, you will then attend Preparation Group Training; and undergo a full assessment by your allocated Social Worker. Please get in touch with us to find out more about this process.
