Advocacy for People With Learning Disabilities

Advocacy is a way of helping people to speak up for themselves.

Everybody has the same rights:

  • To make choices about our lives
  • To get help from Adult Social Care or Health Services if we need it
  • To be told about our rights
  • To have opportunities for leisure, education, training and employment whether we have a disability or not
  • To make a complaint when something goes wrong.

An advocate can:

  • Listen to you
  • Help you to plan any action you may need or wish to take
  • Write letters and make telephone calls with you, or for you
  • Make sure your views are heard by attending meetings/reviews with you
  • Get information for you, or put you in touch with someone who can
  • Spend time with you preparing for meetings
  • Find out other ways you can get support
  • Find out what your rights are
  • Liaise with relevant agencies
