Advocacy for People With Learning Disabilities

Advocacy is a way of helping people to speak up for themselves.

Everybody has the same rights:

  • To make choices about our lives.

  • To get help from Social Services or Health Services if we need it.

  • To be told about our rights.

  • To have opportunities for leisure, education, training and employment whether we have a disability or not.

  • To make a complaint when something goes wrong.

An advocate can:

  • Listen to you.

  • Help you to plan any action you may need or wish to take.

  • Write letters and make telephone calls with you, or for you.

  • Make sure your views are heard by attending meetings/reviews with you.

  • Get information for you, or put you in touch with someone who can.

  • Spend time with you preparing for meetings.

  • Find out other ways you can get support.

  • Find out what your rights are.

  • Liaise with relevant agencies.
