Dementia Commissioning Strategy
Dementia is a national and local priority. It is estimated that there are currently 900 people in Bracknell Forest who have dementia. By 2014, it is projected there will be 1,100 people. We need to plan support and services to make sure they meet the needs of people who have dementia, including younger people with dementia. To do this, we have developed a commissioning strategy.
The strategy sets out the direction for support for people with dementia and their carers from 2009-2014. We already have a commissioning strategy for older people, which addresses the needs of older people who have mental health problems such as depression.
FAQs
1. What is a commissioning strategy?
A commissioning strategy takes an overall view of individuals’ needs and the needs of the community. Using this information, the Council then looks at how they can help people to have choice and control over the support they need. This could be by making agreements with local service providers to meet those needs, and enabling people to choose support they feel will make a difference to their lives.
2. Who was involved in the development of the commissioning strategy?
We involved people with dementia, carers, voluntary organisations and other organisations who provide support. We conducted interviews, and people told us what they thought about the support currently available and where the gaps were. We then consulted widely on these findings to make sure that we had heard all the important messages.
3. How did you identify the priorities in the strategy?
We took on board people’s views and experiences of dementia support and this informed our priorities. We also included other important factors such as information the government told us about how dementia support should look in the future.
We also looked at the population of Bracknell Forest and how this may change over the next 5 years. We considered how many people are likely to have dementia now and in the future and thought about how support is currently offered and how this could be improved.
By gathering all this information, we were able to assess the needs of people with dementia and their carers in Bracknell Forest and plan for the future
