Contributing to your support costs

The Council provides and arranges a wide range of social services for members of the community who need assistance and support.

Social services departments are entitled to ask people to make a contribution for non-residential services provided to adults, people can request a review of their assessed charge at any stage.

In 2009, the Department of Health issued guidance for Councils on how they should calculate a person’s contribution towards the cost of their non-residential adult social care support and services. The guidance is called 'Fairer Contributions: Calculating an Individual's Contribution to their Personal Budget'.

The new system is intended to be fairer for all people, so that people know up front what money they are entitled to from the Council for their support and how much they will have to contribute themselves.

With this in mind, the Council developed its Fairer Contributions Policy, which explains how a person’s contribution towards the cost of their support will be calculated. The new policy came into effect from 1st August 2010.

Some services continue to be provided free of charge such as needs assessment and Intermediate Care others have an assessed charge, which will be calculated on an individual basis.

Individuals will be financially assessed to work out how much they can reasonably afford to contribute towards the cost of their support. People will only contribute what they can reasonably afford to pay, and people on low incomes may be entitled to receive a free support.

The Council is committed to ensuring it uses a consistent and fair approach to asking people to contribute towards the cost of their support. This approach will promote high quality, sustainable services for community members that require social services.
