Preventing Abuse

Abuse can occur in any setting and all staff should be vigilant of it. There are many reasons why abuse may occur and there are also different ways of preventing certain forms of abuse.

Prevention of abuse or repeat incidents of abuse is vital and plays an important role in managing the abuse of vulnerable adults.

Once the Council is alerted to a concern regarding a vulnerable adult, it will, where possible work with the person concerned and their family/carers to complete an assessment of risk, this will include:

  1. The person's wishes regarding their current circumstances and that they would like to happen?
  2. What steps are taken to assure the persons safety in the future?
  3. How services may be modified to meet their needs?
  4. How to support carers or staff?
  5. How to put in place ongoing risk management strategy?
  6. How to monitor the situation in the future?

The assessment should also give pointers to how services may be altered in the future to reduce the incidence of abuse and offer greater support to the individual.
