What is Abuse?
Abuse is when a person or persons have caused harm, or may be likely to do so, to the physical, sexual, emotional, financial or material well being of a vulnerable adult.
Abuse can take many forms including:
Physical abuse
- Hitting
- Slapping
- Kicking
- Inappropriate physical restraint
- Force feeding
Emotional/Psychological abuse
- Intimidation by word or deed
- Humiliation
- Harassment
- Enforced social isolation (including cultural discrimination)
Discrimination
Where a person or group are treated less favourably than you would treat another person based on their colour, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, status and so on.
Financial abuse
Misuse and/or misappropriation of monies, benefits and /or property
Neglect/Deprivation
- Inadequate care
- Neglect of physical and emotional needs
- Deprivation of food, clothing, medical attention or aids
- Denial of basic right to make informed choices
Sexual abuse
Unwanted physical and sexual contact such as caresses
- intercourse, rape and so on
- Indecent exposure
- Sexual harassment (verbal or physical)
- Displaying pornographic literature or videos
- Inappropriate use of sexual material
- Gross indecency
In some cases an individual may experience one or more of the above abuses at the same time.
