New outdoor market plans take shape

7 April 2014

Bracknell Forest Council has submitted plans for a new outdoor Bracknell Market in High Street from this summer.

The council has submitted plans for up to a maximum of 16 stalls and/or pitches to planning officials and, if approved, the launch date for the new market is due to be July 18, 2014.

The council is continuing to work with existing Bracknell Market traders to see what support can be offered to help them transfer to the new outdoor market. It is hoped the outdoor market will provide a shoppers with yet another reason to visit Bracknell town centre at a time when there is lots of regeneration work being carried out.

The council started creating plans for an outdoor market in February after its Regeneration Committee gave the go-ahead for Bracknell Market, which is currently located on the first floor of Winchester House (the former 3M building), to be relocated so the derelict office block can be demolished and redeveloped.

Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said: "We have created plans for a new outdoor Bracknell Market so that residents can still enjoy shopping at a market in their home town, but in an outside location from this summer.

"If the plans are approved; it will allow the market to move to a temporary location in High Street so Winchester House can be demolished and redeveloped, which is something our residents have continually cited as a priority for Bracknell town centre."

- The council is continuing to work with traders and Grenchurch, its market management company, to determine what stalls may be available in the outdoor market if planning permission is granted. Further details will be made available at a later date.

- The outdoor market will be temporarily placed in High Street East (near the banks/ Post Office) so Winchester House can be redeveloped. It will be moved to the Market Square area after building work is complete.
