Caring's sharing

2 March 2010

Young people wanting to learn the difference between a slam dunk and a double dribble, a hand spring and a vault, and a body pop and a break dance should visit Bracknell town centre on Saturday, March 13.

To mark this year’s Share the Care week - a nationwide appeal from Sunday, March 7, to Sunday, March 14, to recruit more short break carers - the family placement team from the council's Children, Young People and Learning department is organising a fun-filled day in Bracknell town centre.

On Saturday, March 13, between 11am and 3pm, the team has arranged for the Urban Elite Team to take centre stage by the water fountain in Charles Square and offer a diverse range of demonstrations including street dancing, cheerleading and basketball skills.

The day is also being supported by Hollywood Bowl, which will be offering free face painting for children.

Penny Reuter, chief officer for children’s social care, said: “The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the need for short break carers for children and young people with disabilities so families with disabled children can have regular breaks from the demands of caring.

“Anyone over the age of 21 can apply to be a carer - gender, marital status, disability, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, employment status or home ownership don't matter. The council provides equipment, training and support to all of its short break carers.”

Last year’s event was a great success, with lots of interest from both young people and people interested in becoming short break carers.

Cllr Gareth Barnard, executive member for children and young people, said: “Share the Care week is a fantastic opportunity to promote the council's recruitment of short break carers.

“If people have ever considered becoming a carer, they shouldn't hesitate in calling the family placement team. It could be one of the most important phone calls they ever make and could change a child or young person’s life forever.”
