South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) first took place in 2018. It runs from the 18 July to 17 August each year.

The month was set up to help understand the culture that links the UK with South Asia.

About South Asia

South Asia includes the following countries:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • India
  • The Maldives
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka

Every single one of those countries has significant history with Britain. A lot of this is primarily through war, colonisation, and the British Empire.

Today the people of South Asian heritage are a significant part of the British population. It is thought that about one in every 20 people in the UK are of South Asian heritage.

2023 theme

SAHM 2023 is all about celebrating the stories that make up South Asian life. The theme encourages people to share stories of their own South Asian heritage.
