Bandi Chor Diwas

Bandi Chor Diwas is on Sunday, 12 November. We spoke with one of our Sikh colleagues about what this time means to her.

“Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights and what Sikhs call Bandi Chor Diwas, holds a special place in the hearts of many. For Sikhs, Bandi Chor Diwas carries a unique and uplifting significance, blending history with spiritual joy.

“At the heart of Bandi Chor Diwas is the celebration of freedom and the triumph of good over evil. This festival commemorates a pivotal moment in Sikh history; the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, from imprisonment in 1619.

“The Guru, embodying compassion and wisdom, didn’t just secure his own freedom, he also ensured the release of 52 kings who were held captive with him. This act of kindness and bravery is remembered with great respect and gratitude.

“On Bandi Chor Diwas, Sikh homes and Gurudwaras glow with the warmth of lights and candles, symbolising hope and eternal light of the soul. It’s a time for family, friends and community to come together, sharing prayers, songs and festive meals. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of delicacies and the vibrant sounds of laughter and music.

“Bandi Chor Diwas is also a time for reflection and renewal. It’s an opportunity to remember the values of courage, compassion and unity and to rekindle the inner light that guides us through life’s challenges.

“In essence, Bandi Chor Diwas is a radiant celebration of freedom, a time of joyous togetherness, and a reminder of the eternal light that shines within every heart, guiding us towards a path of goodness and solidarity.”

Happy Bandi Chor Diwas to all our residents celebrating.
