Holocaust Memorial Day 2024

Hands holding a burning candle

Each year, Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27 January. It is a time where people from across the UK remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

At 8pm on Saturday 27 January people will light candles and put them safely in their windows to:

  • remember those who were murdered for who they were
  • stand against prejudice and hatred today

Time Square will be lit in purple, the official colour of HMD, during this national moment of commemoration and solidarity.

This year’s theme is Fragility of Freedom. You can become part of the Light the Darkness conversation by sharing a photo of your candle and tag HMD on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Use the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness.
