Recycle right this year

Residents are being urged to ‘recycle right’, as recent waste analysis shows over half the contents of green refuse bins could be recycled.

The data was collected from kerbside collections across Bracknell Forest and shows that 63% of green bins (refuse waste) could be recycled by using:

  • blue bins
  • food waste caddies
  • garden waste bins
  • local recycling services

Food waste and textiles, such as old clothes, account for 25% of the bin contents. Paper, card, plastics and garden waste are some of the other common culprits that have added to the issue.

Cllr Helen Purnell, Executive Member for Environment and Community Cohesion, said:

“Although we have made great strides towards better recycling rates in recent years, the data is clear that some of us have become complacent.

“Please take time to reassess how you are disposing of your waste. We have an effective kerbside collection scheme that can eliminate most of these issues.

“Textiles, glass, metals, wood and small electricals can all be recycled too. These should be taken to the correct recycling bank or our recycling centre at Longshot Lane so they can be disposed of correctly.”

Over the next few months, the council will be sharing helpful information on its social media channels and through its waste and recycling e-newsletter to help residents recycle right. Sign up to the e-newsletter to keep up to date with the campaign.

The bins and recycling pages show what can and can’t be recycled at the kerbside, as well as where to dispose of those harder to recycle materials.
