D-Day 80th anniversary

Three D-Day badges

This year marks 80 years since the D-Day landings. Every year on 6 June we remember the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Second World War.

D-Day was the largest seaborne invasion in history, marking the beginning of the liberation of France and Western Europe. D-Day was the name given to the 6 June, 1944 invasion of the beaches at Normandy in northern France. The battalion consisted of troops from a number of countries which included Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

At the time, France was occupied by the armies of Nazi Germany. By the end of the day, nearly 156,000 allied soldiers had landed on the beaches.
The mission was initially planned for 5 June, 1944, but bad weather pushed it back a day. The date celebrates peace, liberty and reconciliation.
