Phase two of Station Roundabout improvement works
29 March 2017
Work to improve Station Roundabout will enter its second phase next month, meaning all temporary traffic lights will be removed on 3 April - allowing traffic to move much more freely.
The work, which is needed to upgrade and expand one of the town's key junctions ahead of The Lexicon's opening in September, is progressing well and engineers have been able to simplify the temporary arrangements for the next phase. As a result, the temporary traffic lights will be removed more than seven weeks earlier than planned.
During phase two there will be an off-peak closure of the entrance into Market Street (from Station Roundabout) for two working weeks (3-7 April and 10-14 April). The closure will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm so it won’t impact peak-time road users. Vehicles exiting Market Street onto Station Roundabout will be unaffected
The off-peak closure is needed so a new traffic island can be built at the top of Market Street as quickly and safely as possible.
Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said: "I am aware this work has caused some inconvenience for our road users, for which I apologise. However, with a newly regenerated town centre comes a significant increase in traffic, therefore we planned these improvement well in advance of The Lexicon's opening, so our already busy road network can better cope with the expected extra traffic.
"As the work enters the second phase I'm sure motorists will be pleased to know that the temporary lights are all due to be removed on 3 April – more than seven weeks ahead of schedule. This will improve the flow of traffic around the junction and should reduce the level of disruption being felt, especially at peak time."
The work is on target to finish by the end of May. Once completed, the new junction will help manage the increased traffic as a result of The Lexicon's opening.
The work at Station Roundabout includes:
- widening of Market Street approach onto the roundabout to provide two lanes
- signalising Bagshot Road and Market Street approaches to the roundabout
- widening of Bagshot Road and Church Road entries and exits of the roundabout
- removal of the dedicated bus/taxi lane on Bagshot Road northbound
Buses will still be able to use Bracknell Bus Station during the off-peak closures - they will enter the bus station via The Ring instead of Market Street. Therefore, bus timetables should not be impacted.
