All organic waste such as wood chippings, grass cuttings, prunings, vegetable peelings and tea bags can be placed in the composter to produce a rich mulch for use in the garden. The Council has an agreement with WRAP who will provide composters at competitive prices to residents of Bracknell Forest.

Residents who would like to exchange their current green landfill bin for a smaller one may receive a free composter.
Why do we need to compost food waste, when it degrades in landfill anyway?
In order for organic waste to degrade it needs the presence of air. Waste in landfill sites is heavily squashed and compacted, so it does not decompose properly as it has limited access to air. Instead the greenhouse gas methane is produced. At least 30% of your household bin could be composted. So why not give it a try?!
How to get started
Start by placing your composter directly onto bare soil and preferably somewhere sunny. Add your compostable material. There is a wide range of organic matter which can be added to your compost bin - make sure you have a good mix of both greens and browns, otherwise your compost will either be too sludgy or too dry.

Browns
Make sure you only put in items which will compost. Do not put in any of the following.
Non-compostable materials
Chopping up large items will help speed up the composting process. Every so often try and aerate your compost bin, by turning it with a garden fork or alternatively add scrunched up paper which creates air pockets. After between 6-24 months your compost should be ready for you to use! For further information on home composting visit the Recycle Now: compost at home web pages.
