The Social Care and Learning Department’s aim is to help people achieve the best possible outcomes for their lives through education, advice and guidance, access to support and where necessary day and residential care services.
For children and young people aged between 0 and 19 years in Bracknell Forest we provide universal, targeted, specialist and crisis intervention services. Some of these are managed directly like children’s social care, children’s centres and the Youth Service. Others are provided indirectly like schools and some commissioned from other agencies, like most special needs provision.
We support those moving from care and those with learning difficulties or disabilities in the transition to adult life. For adults the Department continues to provide for those with care needs to enable them to live within the community and be in control of their own support wherever possible. There is also an adult and community learning dimension to the Department.
The Department plays a major role in shaping provision within the Borough through a range of partnerships including the Children’s Trust, and the Early Years and Childcare, Health and Social care and Lifelong Learning Partnerships. It also runs the Local Safeguarding Children Board, and is responsible for safeguarding adults with care needs too.
The department is comprised of five branches:
Both children’s and adults’ services have achieved good ratings in their most recent external inspections.
The department employs over 800 people directly, including a large number of part time staff in front line services, and is responsible for the employment of another 2,400 people in schools.
