Bracknell Forest Council recognises the importance of the voluntary and community sector to the quality of life of the Borough, and wants to support core services provided by voluntary organisations through its powers under section 2 of the Local Government Act 2000. Revenue grant funding will be available in 2009/10 for core services provided by a number of existing voluntary sector partners in support of Council objectives.
The Council remains under considerable financial pressure. For this reason, only current recipients of revenue grant funding will be invited to apply. We regret that unsolicited applications will not be successful. The Council will continue to provide financial support to these existing local partners because of the vital role they play in helping it to achieve its objectives in the community, and the difficulties these organisations encounter in trying to secure financial support from other sources.
In addition to supporting the Council’s objectives, we believe that continuing to fund our key voluntary sector partners will help to:
- Improve community cohesion by helping people to establish and maintain connections with the community in which they live;
- Improve community engagement by getting more people more actively involved in their local community;
- Improve citizenship empowerment by enabling people to identify their own needs, priorities and responses; and
- Improve the quality of life of residents who benefit from voluntary sector activities.
The only type of grant funding available from Bracknell Forest Council in 2009/10 will be revenue grants of over £5,000 in support of core service overheads. Allocation of these grants forms part of the Council’s service planning process, and they can only be awarded to organisations which have been identified as either making a significant contribution to the Council’s medium-term objectives or providing a service that the Council may otherwise have to provide itself.
Relevant organisations will be invited to apply for funding, and unsolicited applications will not be successful. However, the Council provides funding for the Berkshire Community Foundation, which makes small one-off grants to community organisations in the Borough. Organisations not invited to apply for Council funding are actively encouraged to apply to the Berkshire Community Foundation. Additionally, Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action may be able to assist with identifying alternative funding sources.
