School choice advice

The Family Information Service offers free, confidential, impartial advice and support to all parents and carers throughout the admissions process. Choosing which school you would prefer your child to attend is a very important decision and the admissions process can be complicated. We can work with you to help you make the most informed and realistic choice of school for your child.

How we can help you

Following are some of the ways we can help:

  • explain how to apply for a primary or secondary school place
  • help you to fill in the application form (on paper or online)
  • provide information about local schools, such as Ofsted reports, performance tables and how places have been allocated in previous years
  • explain the admissions policies for different schools
  • explain the school admissions appeals procedure
