Councillor Complaints

The Council has adopted a Code of Conduct governing the conduct of its Councillors. The Council has also adopted various other protocols relating to Councillors, including a protocol on how Councillors should conduct themselves in relation to planning applications. Complaints that a Councillor has failed to observe the Code of Conduct for Members or the Planning Protocol are normally dealt with by the Standards Committee

Anyone wishing to make a complaint that a Councillor has acted in breach of the Code of Conduct may use the Councillor Complaints Form. Alternatively, a copy of the complaints form may be obtained from the Council’s reception desks at the Council offices in Easthampstead House or Time Square, or from any public library within the Borough.

Although anonymous complaints may be the subject of initial consideration it is unlikely that they will be referred for investigation or lead to some other action unless they are accompanied by documents or photographic evidence indicating an exceptionally serious or significant matter. The identity of the complainant will normally be disclosed to the Councillor against whom a complaint is made although in exceptional circumstances the Sub-Committee which makes the initial assessment may decide that the identify of the complainant should be withheld.

Council employees, contractors engaged by the Council or bidding for Council work (or any of their employees) who wish to complain of some alleged impropriety or illegality in the conduct of Council business should consider using the Council’s whistleblowing procedure.
