Local Democracy Week

This is an initiative led by the Local Government Association which aims to work with young people to increase their understanding of local democracy, community issues and the importance of making their voices heard.

Local Democracy Week aims to engage young people and spark their interest in politics. We want to get young people more involved with and aware of, their local council and councillors.

Research commissioned by the Local Government Association shows that just one in three 11-16 year olds have ever met a councillor or MP and states that those who have ‘are more likely to express feelings of political engagement and interest.’

Last year Whitegrove School hosted a Political Speed Questioning Event for all their Year 6 children. This is a fun way for them to meet the councillors and talk to them about the things that matter to them.

This year the Council is hosting a ‘Question Time’ event for post 16 students from local schools and Bracknell College. They will be putting questions to a Panel of Councillors about the work of the Council. This event is being recorded by college students and will be available to view on the Council’s YouTube channel.

The Leader, Cllr Paul Bettison, is also facing his own personal question time from Friday, October 16 (after the Hanworth Ward by-election) until Friday, October 23, when he will answer queries from residents about the workings of the council and its services.
