Taxi licence information for drivers, vehicle owners and operators
All drivers, vehicles and operators involved in hire or reward work need to be licensed. Hackney Carriages can be hailed in the street or from taxi ranks, have a ‘taxi’ roof sign, and charge a fare on a mater installed in the vehicle. Private Hire vehicles must be booked in advance through a licensed private hire operator. The fare charged should be agreed at the time of booking.
During the application process, drivers undertake various assessments. These include a:
- knowledge test
- criminal records check
- medical check
- practical driving test
- check to confirm eligibility to work in the UK
Applicants for an operator licence must also have the right to work in the UK and undertake a knowledge test and criminal records. You can view a list of current licensed operators.
Before a licence is granted, you must provide evidence of insurance for hire and reward. All vehicles are inspected for roadworthiness to a standard exceeding a regular MOT. This test comprises all of the MOT elements plus an additional set of criteria for hackney carriages and private hire vehicles.
If you are booking an inspection with one of our authorised garages, please confirm at the time of booking whether you need an MOT certificate, as this may not be provided unless agreed in advance. The garage confirm directly with us whether the vehicle has passed or failed the inspection.
