Free childcare hours now and in the future

This page shows what help is currently available and how that help will be expanded in the future.

This is based on a term time place - 38 weeks per year.

9 to 23 months

Current

None.

Future

Eligible parents can get:

  • 15 hours from September 2024
  • 30 hours from September 2025

Both parents must work and earn the equivalent of £166 per week, each with a taxable income of no more than £100,000. This will be based on the current 30 hour funding criteria.

2 years

Current

Free childcare for children aged 2 years is available to:

  • parents in receipt of certain benefits
  • child looked after by a local authority
  • child with an education, health and care plan
  • child in receipt of disability living allowance
  • child has left care under an adoption order, special guardianship or a child arrangements order

They can get 15 hours of free childcare, and this will not change.

Future

If not eligible for the funding above, working parents that meet the current 30 hour funding criteria will also be eligible for funded childcare. Both parents must work and earn the equivalent of £166 per week, each with a taxable income of no more than £100,000.

They can get:

  • 15 hours from April 2024
  • 30 hours from September 2025

3 to 4 years

Free childcare for children aged 3 to 4 years does not change:
